Brunch with the Doctors!

Peace Greetings!

I got the opportunity to have a brunch meet up with doctors at Medeor 24x7 hospital, Dubai and we had casual talks on everyday issues we face and they shared a few tips and insightful information.

After a recent let down by some doctors, I must say that the doctors I met here were resourceful, very expressive and willing to explain. Sometimes that is the issue with doctors, we can’t get them to speak and let us know what we want to know and clear our doubts. It was an insightful event and here are some of the issues we touched upon:

§  Visiting the right doctor for the right issue. We shouldn’t be going to a General Practitioner if we have a skin issue. The GP will take care of the issue at a surface level, based on his area of knowledge which may be limited. Whereas a dermatologist, is an expert in the field and may be able to find the root of the issue and tackle the future probabilities as well.

§  Educating oneself and others about not accepting antibiotics without a prescription over the counter.

§  Taking your child for regular visits and not only when there is a problem. And asking the right questions and knowing why you are being given that particular medicine. If the doctor is good, they should be telling you the next milestone for your child, how/when to start potty training, what is the immediate medical help from homes, in case of accidents, etc.

§  Training your child to eat the right wholesome diet from a young age, so that vitamins are absorbed in the natural and best way. But in case you feel that your child is not having a balanced meal, giving sugar free vitamin supplements and making sure that they don’t take it in excessive quantities.

§  Paracetamol/ adol/ Panadol is ok because its mild and safe in moderation but Aspirin and other antibiotics are not to be consumed unless prescribed. Having prophylactics (preventive medicines) is fine but at a controlled rate, as it can have adverse effects in the long run. Using nasal sprays and drops like Otrivin only when there is a need to and not for more than 3 days.

§  Vitamin D absorption is very vital and is best from the nature’s source – sun! As per the recent research, the ideal time is when the sun is perpendicular which is 12:00 noon. I don’t exactly know why the times keep changing, but the weather in Dubai will definitely not make it possible at that time. So the ideal time would be in the early morning hours and late afternoons.

§  Wearing light colored cotton/ linen clothes, exposing arms and legs with a hat/cap to cover the head and staying out in the sun for at least 20 mins is important for the right amount of vitamin D absorption. Vitamin D is important for calcium absorption.

§  We mommies require it as much as our children, so go out for a walk in the sun with your kids getting yourselves hydrated and eat well to be energized to tackle the heat.

§  Another issues we mommies tend to have is low levels of hemoglobin in our blood. Doctors say its due to our regular menstrual cycle when we lose blood, which need to be replenished in our bodies. As our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) says ‘Our bodies have a right over us’ and just like how we take care of our families we should give ourselves equal attention by eating good food, colorful fruits and veggies in this case, exercise and getting good rest and doing what we love. Easier said than done.

§  Having a balanced lifestyle and exercise is very ideal for a healthy life, and keeping PCOS and other common issues away from us. Doctors stressed upon the importance of taking care, exercise and keeping away from Junk.

 Allah says in the Qur’an:

And He enforced the balance. That you exceed not the bounds; but observe the balance strictly; and fall not short thereof. (55:7–9) ;
Eat of the good things which We have provided for you. (2:173) Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth. (2:168)

§  Let's not believe that everything is for monetised these days; let’s have hope and create a trust with doctors, coz they have knowledge and expertise in their field and lets pray that the Lord of the Worlds heal us and make our affairs right for us. May we not be victims and may God make us healthy and give us goodness in this world and in the hereafter.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when he visited the sick, used to comfort him and say the following Prayer
-
"O Allah remove the hardship, O Lord of mankind, grant cure for You are the Healer. There is no cure but from You, a cure which leaves no illness behind."

- "Allahumma Azhibil bas, Rabbannas, Ishfi wa anta Shafi, La Shifa illa Shafaok. Shifaal La Yoghadiro saqama."

He used to make following prayer for his own health -
"O Allah cure my body, cure my heart and cure my eyesight from any illness" (repeated 3 times).

- "Allahumma Afini fi badni, afini fi qalbi wa afini fi basari" (3 times).

I hope this write up was beneficial for you in some way. Please let me know what you think, would really appreciate.

Some of the Doctors I met at Medeor 24x7 Hospital

Dr. Mohammad Rashid, Specialist Pediatrician
Dr. Seejo George, Specialist ENT Surgeon
Dr. Ahmed Alhaj Saleh, Consultant Internal Medicine
Dr. Maryam Mohammad Raoufi, Specialist Ob—Gyn
Dr. Sureshbabu Rengasamy, Specialist Dermatologist

I've heard a lot of good reviews about their Head Gynaec, Dr. Shiva Harikrishnan. I couldn't meet her personally but her room looked very interesting, and spoke a lot about her. She has a whole wall full of pictures of new born babies she assisted mommies to deliver. It shows her love for what she does.

The hospital is equipped with smiling staff and facilities. And they have a whole floor to take care of mumms (as they say). The pediatric department was really colorful and had a play area as well for the kids.
